Advocacy Collective Asserts to Have Extracted Millions of Audio Files from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights group has stated to have scraped a vast number of songs from the popular streaming service and is preparing to release them publicly.

Possible Impetus for Artificial Intelligence Training

Industry experts said the seeming data breach could aid AI companies searching for data to develop their models.

A group called Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million music files from Spotify and 256 million entries of metadata such as performer and record names. The company, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the leak did not represent its entire catalog.

“We have identified and deactivated the nefarious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” stated a company spokesperson.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, further explained that an inquiry into unauthorized access found a third party scraped public metadata and employed illicit methods to circumvent DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Stated Mission and Concerns

The streaming service does not think the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for providing links to copyright-infringing books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘historical repository’ for music.

The group claimed the audio files represented 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be shared via ‘torrents’, a method of sharing large data files online.

“Of course Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great start,” commented Anna’s Archive, which describes its purpose as “preserving humanity’s information and culture”.

AI Training and Copyright Debate

A composer and campaigner for defending artists’ copyright, said the breached music would probably be utilized for developing artificial intelligence systems.

“Educating models on illegally sourced material is unfortunately widespread in the AI industry, so this accessed music is highly likely to end up instructing AI models,” he stated.

The group's website alludes to a large online archive, a vast online repository of pirated books that has allegedly been used by Meta to train its AI models.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on LinkedIn that members of the public could in theory “build their own private free version of the service”. The executive said it could also allow technology firms to “train on modern music at scale”.

Intellectual property law has emerged as a battleground between artists, writers and content creators on one side and AI companies on the other.

Government Considerations and Reactions

Across Britain, creative professionals have raised concerns against a ministerial suggestion to allow AI companies utilize protected work without consent unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every participant to a government call for evidence on the idea has supported artists’ concerns.

The secretary of state for technology, innovation and technology told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the issue, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The administration has pledged to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
