Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
