Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
